 Does what it says on the box, 2010-07-16
I bought this to replace an old LG one that was getting unreliable (probably from dust in the works as we're next door to a building site). It was cheap and works well, though I find the laptop-style centre-click disc tray rather flimsy. Personally I still prefer the LG one as it seems more solidly built and has a full tray - but the modern equivalent is nearly 50% more expensive, so on balance the Samsung is better value.

This is a neat little machine and it does everything that it's supposed to, quietly and without fuss. It's no sprinter, but then I have a relatively small amout of RAM on my netbook and, hey, I'm retired and have plenty of time! I particularly like the fact that it takes its power via the USB data transfer cable, so no need for yet another transformer and bulky 13 amp plug. Small, neat, efficient and very good value. Oh, and delivery was quick also! Brilliant!

We recently bought an Acer 1810TZ laptop which has no built-in CD/DVD drive so needs to be hooked up with an external drive to load software from CD. Unfortunately, it has the 64-bit version of Windows 7 and this is incompatible with our old USB CD drive. So we bought one of these Samsung drives, plugged it in and it worked. A Y-shaped USB cable is supplied which plugs into two USB sockets on the laptop ... this supplies enough power to work the Samsung drive (without the need for an AC power supply), writing as well as reading both CDs and DVDs. Very compact, portable and convenient. It would presumably work well with any modern PC, laptop or netbook.

This product arrived a little late, but im very pleased with the actual product. Its quite slim and compact and its quite stylish aswell. One problem is that if you have a disc inside and move the hardware unit around then your disc could get scratched so be careful. But on the whole i think its very good.

I have used the external drive for reading and writing both CD's and DVD's and i have not incurred any problems whatsoever. It's easy to use, speeds are fine and fairly quiet. As i often travel with my small laptop it was an ideal purchase to have and is small and durable enough to carry around.
