Editorial Review
Product Description
When you receive a telephone call at home, trueCall immediately checks the caller's number.

- If it recognises them as a friend or a member of your family, trueCall lets them through as normal.

- If the caller's number is on your personal Zap list - a list of numbers of telemarketers or other nuisance callers - trueCall answers the call itself, and politely tells the caller that you're not interested in their call - your phone never rings!

- If trueCall doesn't recognise the caller's number, or the caller withholds their number, it asks them who they are, puts them on hold and only then rings your phone. When you pick-up trueCall tells you who's calling, and you can choose whether to accept the call, get TrueCall to take a message, or Zap the caller - in which case trueCall takes over, asks them to go away, and puts them on your Zap list so they can't disturb you again!

Average rating of 5/5 If you yearned for a quiet life..., 2010-07-26
...if you yearned for a quiet life, this is the way to get it. No more dropping everything for the 'phone, only for a stupid recorded message that you don't need, drivelling on.

For "recorded message", substitute any other call you don't want.

Average rating of 5/5 Sheer Bliss (!!!), 2010-06-19
Driven to distraction by callers for a number exactly as ours, but one digit away in the area code, we suffered calls at all hours of the day and night.

Callers to this medical based service were mis-dialing and getting through to us instead.
Complaints about these calls fell on "Deaf Ears" as far as our sevice provider was concerned and only solution offered was for us to change our number.

This would have been inconvienient and costly to us and was, it seemed, the only answer to being called so many times a day.

A friend informed us about "True Call". He sang the praises of this wonder box and I reluctantly decided to buy one.
It was quick and easy to install, has excellent on line support and instructions.
It works even better if you have "Call line identifier" capability from your service provider.

With this wonder box connected to our line we could not belive just how effective it is at sorting "Wanted" calls from the unwanted ones.

The more its used the more it knows about your favoured callers and those that you do not want disturbing you at any time of the day, let alone during the "Wee small hours"

It is easy to set up and really does work wonderfully well. Price-wise it is a real bargain for the money and the peace and quiet it brings to the household.

I must state that I have no connection with "True Call" in any way, other than being a very satisfied customer.
If you are plagued by unwanted calls of any kind, this is the gadjet for you.
Highly recommended.

Average rating of 5/5 A tremendous device, with a few practical niggles, 2010-05-29
Many other reviewers have already eulogized about the excellent features of TrueCall, and I concur with those eulogies, so I just want to point to a few things that are worth knowing before you rush out and buy one.

1. For some arcane reason the TrueCall unit at present is NOT wall-mountable, so if you do want it on a wall you'd have to improvise.

2. The mini-LEDs on the front edge of the unit would be invisible if you did try to wall-mount it (i.e. by some improvised means) in an upright position, unless you mounted it unduly high up on the wall. Basically, those LEDs are not in the most helpful position and really need to be on the front of the top of the unit.

3. The LED that shines through the large button on top of the unit emits quite a lot of light, which I personally find quite intrusive even by day, and I find it really unliveable with at night (it shines into my bedroom). I had to improvise to cover it up at night - not all that easy to achieve really effectively because of the shape of the unit.

4. I didn't find out till I got the unit and read through its reference manual, that the TrueCall has a mild compatibility issue with 1571 phones - that is, phones with a 1571 button and which make regular automatic 1571 checks to see if you have any voicemail. As it happened, I'd just bought a phone which happened to have that 1571 facility. In practice this appears not to be a real issue for me, but I just point out that this is information which really needs to be in the sales blurb on the TrueCall website.

5. By default, the active screening method (in addition to Star&Zap) is 'Whisper', which requires the caller to say their name, so that you can listen to a recording of their saying their name before you choose whether to accept their call. However, I realized that for me and presumably for many other people this isn't ideal, because, for example, if somebody says 'Steve', that might be Steve from Shark-Loans.biz seeking to fleece you of lots of nice money, or it might be an old school friend called Steve, whose voice you wouldn't recognise now but would very much like to hear from.

So, for the majority of people I would recommend the course of action that I took - to disable the 'Whisper' screening method and turn on the Shield method, which gives an announcement asking cold callers to hang up and not call again, and requires other callers who aren't on the 'Star' list to press a specified number key before they are put through to you. In my view it would thus be better if 'Shield' were the default screening method.

I have e-mailed the TrueCall people about these issues, and my impression is that they are particularly responsive to any reasonable suggestions, so it will be interesting to see if in time these issues get resolved.

(Update a couple of days later)
I've had a very positive e-mail response from the TrueCall people, and I was given instructions for changing an undocumented setting to turn the strong blue 'pilot' LED off. So, if you have a TrueCall and want it not to have that constant blue light shining, just e-mail TrueCall support and you'll be given the instructions for turning it off.
