Average rating of 5/5 Forget everything else, get your HERO!!!, 2010-05-02
I got a HERO for my younger brother and he likes it so much that I have become a hero for him!!! Exceptionally good phone, great built quality, great camera and lots of free stuff available on Android Market. Android rocks.

Average rating of 5/5 Fantastic Phone, 2010-07-22
This phone has been truly superb, and beats the iPhone in almost all aspects in my opinion. The touchscreen is brilliantly responsive, and with the new Android 2.1 update the software the phone is even better. In short, buy it, you won't be disappointed.

Average rating of 3/5 Beware - This is an Orange branded phone, 2010-07-02
This is a really good phone and does all the things I wanted it to do, I researched it before buying and figured this phone was the best model to buy from a value for money point of view. The email was easy to set up, browsing is easy and built in Facebook and Twitter apps work well. You can also connect it to your laptop via a USB cable to use it as a modem if you have no Wifi.
Part of my research identified that there was an update of the Android operating system due to be delivered to the phone. The current operating system is 1.5 and the update brings it to 2.1. Most people with unlocked HTC Hero phones are now receiving this update over the network. Phones that are branded (like this one) will receive the update via the branded network (ie Orange) after they adapt it and add their logos to it. This proves to be a problem if like me you are on O2. O2 will not be sending out an update because they do not support this phone. I intend to get an Orange sim when the update comes out to see if this allows me to upgrade the operating system.
In the meantime if you are considering buying this phone, bare in mind it is branded Orange, although it should work with any network sim, it will only get the upgraded operating system if you are on Orange.
I have emailed the seller about this but he did not appear to understand the issue and stopped replying to my emails.

Average rating of 4/5 Great....but don't buy it!, 2010-04-26
Firstly, a very quick review of the phone. As a newcomer to both smart phones and Android, I didn't find it easy to set up. It probably took 20-30 hours to set it up exactly as I wanted (contacts, email addresses (not easy with Yahoo addresses), screens, apps, music), read enough of the online manual and check the Hero Forum to understand how to get the best out of it. But, having gone through all that pain, it is a great phone - easy to use, endlessy personalisable and great for almost anything except taking pictures and listening to music. Sorry, Ipods are better for music. And it looks great as well.

So why not buy it? As a recent reviewer said, the problem is the release of Android supplied with the phone. The release is Android 1.5 which is frankly outdated. Increasing numbers of Apps only work with Android 1.6 and higher making these apps unuseable at the moment. This situation will get worse daily as the number of Android Apps is increasing rapidly (40,000+ as I write this). An HTC supplied upgrade to Android 2.1 has been rumoured for months but it has been delayed.....and delayed.....and delayed. Currently HTC suggest this will come out in June. However, given HTC's history of spreading rumours for the release date and then failing to release it, I will believe it only when it is on my phone.

So, if you want an HTC Android phone, look at the Legend or the Desire. Don't consider buying the Hero as you will be buying something that is out of date - unless the price drops and HTC bring out a really good version of Android 2.1 for Hero.

Average rating of 1/5 Massive problems with this phone, 2010-05-05
I've had this about 8 months on contract, branded as a G2. At first I loved it - and am a total convert to the smartphone idea - but, BUT:

Do your research carefully before getting one of these. There are massive problems with the Hero on some (possibly all) networks that make it in my view not fit for purpose. Specifically, when the phone switches automatically between different speeds of internet connection (H, G and 3G in the top status bar) it will often freeze for minutes at a time. Okay, you might think, losing data connection's a bit of a pain, but no dealbreaker. But during these freezes, it also stops functioning as a phone. Text messages get delayed by anything up to a day, people trying to phone you will get a message that the number's unavailable or be put straight through to voicemail - all without you knowing.

The network providers are blowing smoke about this and have been for months. But the info's all out there. So if you have one of these, check with your friends whether the above's been happening. If you don't, search on htc hero and problems to see more, and think VERY carefully before landing yourself with an expensive piece of equipment that frequently won't function as a phone let alone a smartphone, won't tell you about it, and seemingly has no foreseeable fix for a longrunning problem that should have been seen as a showstopper from day one.
