iPhone killer? Not sure, but it goes toe to toe., 2010-03-09 The TP2 is a bit thicker than the iPhone, a bit heavier, but not quite as broad, but it does have the really slick slide out keyboard (I've got big fingers and it is easy to use).
The Windows 6.5 interface will be familiar to most users, and works smoothly, although having installed the SPB interface now it's more fun to play with (although SPB does crash occasionally). The camera / video camera function is adequate for taking candid shots (if I want quality I'll use a camera or a video camera, not a phone).
Ultimately this phone is a business oriented phone, but it has enough applications and gadgets to keep anyone busy. One advantage for me in particular is the ability to install MS Reader, meaning I can carry a library in my pocket. I still haven't found a flash based .lit file reader, so it beats the iPhone on that point. Overall, if you don't want to be one of the herd this is a good contender, and sliding out the keyboard, bending up the screen and putting it on your desk is guaranteed to get some attention, even from iPhone users. (FYI, I gave it 4 stars, but I wouldn't give the iPhone 5 stars either).
HTC Touch Pro 2 - Quick Review, 2010-02-02 I've had my touch pro 2 for under a week but I'm really loving it so far.
In spite of all the criticism that gets levied at WinMo devices I'm so far very impressed, TouchFlo 3D is a considerable improvement over the standard interface and a definite worthwhile addition by HTC. I decided to try SPB Mobile Shell out anyway and I have to say it's made me fall totally in love with this phone, extending it from a "power user" device I was happy with into a truly flashy phone that's fun to use and fun to show off if you have geeky friends. Note that changing this part of the interface does not affect the HTC dialling screen which still allows you to swap between normal and conference call modes which is a great relief.
Every review I've seen emphasises how amazing the keyboard is so on that subject I'll just point out that they're right, it's no desktop replacement but it's as good as you're likely to get without swapping your phone for SIM enable laptop.
I tested the GPS functionality and from a cold start I was waiting about a minute before I gave up waiting for a location on Google maps when I remembered there was a GPS speedup utility bundled to take advantage of the assisted GPS support. Turned GPS off and ran this which got the satellite locations from the net over 3G in a matter of seconds, when returning to Google maps and turning GPS on after the speedup utility had been run it got a signal and pinpointed my location in the office carpark almost immediately.
Phone calls are clear and sharp and the mute ring and speakerphone on turning the phone face down work as advertised and will undoubtedly be handy to avoid searching for the on screen options (in case you haven't spotted it in any other reviews turning the phone face down when it's ringing will mute the ring rather than activating the speaker, I'm sure anyone on this page already knows that when the line's active this action will enable the speakerphone).
The camera seems fine for my purposes, I've not used it a lot and I'm no photographer so capturing a memory is more important to me than the fine detail of exactly how perfect the white balance and colour sharpness is. The images I've taken seem high enough quality to keep me happy and the lack of a dedicated camera button doesn't bother me. Most of the pictures I've taken I've touched the screen somewhere to get it to refocus on that spot so had a finger near the screen to take the shot anyway. The WorldCard Mobile application bundled with the phone works a treat, and so far has only gotten 2 individual characters wrong in addresses, a quick and simple fix with the hardware keyboard and cursor keys.
Internet browsing with Opera mobile is fast and works well, the only minor annoyance is that you normally have to zoom in in order click on links, but the dedicated zoom slider area makes this pretty simple if a little fiddly if the page is still loading as the Opera rendering engine will put you back in the top left of the page after a zoom if the page has loaded more content while you were zooming in. A few pages I've been too haven't liked Opera too much and the bundled IE browser has worked well on those, though it's slower to use this is mostly because it waits for more of the page to load before showing it to you so you can't start browsing or reading until most of the page is loaded.
You do still bump into some windows phone areas that aren't exactly beautiful, select a contact category being one of the most annoying if you need to select the top item as there's only a few pixels difference between ticking the checkbox and opening the start menu.
I did experience a few times where the interface became unresponsive until it caught up when using TouchFlo 3D, mostly when first changing back to the TouchFlo interface from another program. I assume TouchFlo is more resource hungry than SPB Mobile Shell as I haven't experienced that once since changing over.
One thing to take note of is that there are an awful lot of settings you can change to tweak things to the way you like them. If you're coming from a normal phone and don't have any previous Pocket PC or Windows Mobile experience it will be worth looking online for how to do something if you can't find it quickly on the phone as alot of settings are very well buried.
This is hands down the best phone I have ever owned or used.
HTC Touch Pro 2 - better than you think, 2009-12-31 I've had this phone now for a couple of months and thought that i'd put my opinion of it for you to make your own judgement.
I like this phone because it's like haivng a mini computer in your hands as well as everything else. The screen is a good size and the qulaity is very good. I have all my contacts in it with their own ring tones, pictures names, addresses, emails, numbers and much more.
I have the phone sync'd with my Microsoft Outlook Diary, therefore, i have my diary on my phone. I update everything on the laptop and Sync it to the phone every so often. Yes you can sync the contacts and email, but i've yet to do this.
I have Word Documents and Excel documents from my laptop now on my phone and you can read and edit them too.
I have my AOL email on my laptop and now on my phone. I send and receive emails all the time and its a doddle to use. Me and dad email images, documents and even movies to each other. Just the other day I email i film of my new born to him and he sent me an xmas video of him.
The touch screen gets some getting used to as you need to learn how hard or soft to press. There's a handy Stylus to use and i even use the keyboard on occasions.
Sometimes the touch screen is a bit tempramental if you type too fast with the stylus, but otherwise its good (not excellent), just good.
Somebody wrote that you have to use the touch screen to answer calls and end them....HELLO!!! What do you think the buttons on the bottom of the phone are for...exactly...they are the usual answer/end call buttons!!!!!
Roaming round the phone to use the different applications is good and ive already downloaded apps for keeping track of my data usage and for playing movies. I have several feature length films on my phone. I bought an 8Gb card from Amazon and may upgrade it soon!
The only bad things i have to say about this phone is that i expected it to be alot faster, but that's me and you may probably not notice it. Battery life is good, but you have to remember that the screen is large and will obviously use alot of battery, plus i check for emails every 5 mins, which also uses power.
All in all, a good phone, that with some tweeks, will be even better. I think that it is a good rival phone to the iPhone.
Good and Bad, 2009-12-31 Here is a real life review of my experience using this phone. This is my 4th htc phone with keyboard.
The Bad.
The battery is the worst I have ever had. If I have it fully charged at 6pm, with bluetooth on for my headset and 1 h talk time at most, the rest of the time bluetooth is on but the phone is untouched. The next day at 12am, the phone is dead. That is 17h Standby and 1h talk time, I have tried to resolve this HTC more than twice to no avail, they say things like well you know bluetooth drains your battery, turn it off, well I never had that problem before, and I want a usable phone. (I did buy a second battery and that didnt help.)
They told me that standby is 750h and talk time 390 min or 6.5h. Well even with bluetooth off I can guarantee that it comes no were near 750h, I know this is in laboratory conditions but there is a difference between 16h standby that I have and their 750, according to HTC my phone should last 46 times longer than it does. Does anyone else have this poor battery life problem? I would have given 3-4 stars if it wasn't for the battery.
A problem that persists from my last HTC the TNT2 Ultra is that when you turn the volume down if you don't want to hear it ring, when you turn the volume back up again, well sometimes the volume comes back and sometimes it doesn't!
As with all these pocket pc's the processor just is never powerful enough, time lag when working through the phone to make calls, texts or anything is annoying because the processor can't keep up.
The reset button is under the front cover, so you have to take off the cover to reset it, on my last phone it was on the outside, and resetting the phone was a thing I used to do quite alot. Nothing too major but it puts you off resetting it when the phone slows down too much.
Also very annoying, with last phone when the headset was connected and I walked away with my phone and left the headset in the car, when I would return to the car, the headset would automatically reconnect, not with this new phone, it might if you are lucky. Then I have to turn the headset off, on again and if I am lucky it connects, if not I have to do that again, if I am visiting 10 customers in a day, you can imagine how that drives me mad, and it is very dangerous as I sometimes end up answering the phone with no headset as it isn't connected!
And the predicitve text used to be great, it learned the phrases you wrote the most, not just words, when I used to start wrighting "regar" it would complete with "regards, Tristan Custom Carpentry" which I would sign at the end of every text. Now I have to do one word at a time, it only predicts one word! On top of that, when I set it to predict mode, it forever resets itself back to non predictive mode, so now I just don't bother.
The Good.
The keyboard is amazing, lots of keys and a good size to type on, in fact this and the big screen are the main reasons why I have always had these phones, if it wasnt for the keyboard, I would look for another phone such as the Iphone (although I hear the battery life is poor on that too, they need to poor more money into battery technology)
The smooth quality action of the keyboard when you pull it out is great, it feels like quality and is very satisfying. Being able to also tilt the screen is also great unlike the nokia competitor.
The HTC interface that sits over the windows software is such a great advance over my last phone! It looks good and feels more intuative to use.
Being able to add a memory card in the phone is great so you can have pics, music and videos on, I also keep my notes permanently on there.
The Screen is big and beautiful, great for surfing the net, watching videos or looking at pictures.
Being able to set the Green call button on the front of the phone to activate any application or folder you want is very very useful, I have mine attached to my notes as I make notes alot. Though on my last phone there were at least 3 buttons that you could do this with.
Ok I can't think of anything more for now, but will make an effort to note down other issues that I had.
I hope this has been usefull.
A serious smartphone for serious uses, 2010-01-04 Like most people considering spending this kind of money on a phone, I had to weigh up power versus cuteness. It's nice to have something cute and flashy, like the iPhone, but I actually need my phone to do things for me as well. The Touch Pro 2 is a good balance between the two, albeit with some compromises.
The good:
- built-in physical keyboard
- Windows (huge range of serious software for business use, connect to bluetooth keyboards, etc)
- removable storage
- call quality excellent on earpiece & speakerphone (on Orange UK in both rural & urban locations)
- the GPS is quite often quicker to pick up satellites than my dedicated handheld satnav
The bad:
- the interface isn't as consistently cute as the iPhone
- battery life isn't great, but I've had the same complaint about every smartphone I've ever owned
- processor speed can't deliver the cute touchscreen niceties as fast as the iPhone
- no 3.5mm audio jack (almost unforgiveable these days)
