Best printer... ever., 2010-02-27 This is a fantastic printer. Very, very easy to change cartridges when they run out. But the cartridges last for ages. I haven't done an exact page count, but it must be about 1,500 pages of text on one black cartridge! Cheap too, if you find a good website. The scanner is extremely easy to use, especially with the feeder. The only downside is the 150 page paper tray. But I got the additional 2nd tray for about £30 and this holds the usual 250 pages. Great printer.
Worst printer ever had!, 2010-03-08 Purchased this printer and the first machine wouldn't pick up the paper from the paper tray. Returned the machine and a replacement was delivered. This second machine wouldn't even complete the installation process. HP support useless so wouldn't recommend this machine to anyone. Now have a Lexmark which does what it says it does on the box....Prints, copies, and scans!
Steer clear of this printer, 2010-02-25 These don't work well. very frequently the paper feed roller either doesn't drop down onto teh pile of paper or else it simply spins on top of teh paper pile without feeding paper into teh printer. I have had two of these printers now - sent the first one back thinking the problem was a one off but the replacement printer is just as bad. Steer clear of these printers - they're no good.
Good but not reliable - best to avoid just now, 2010-02-20 I have an old HP Office Jet (7 years old) that has worked well for many years but the volume I now need has grown.
The 8500 is a fast printer and very easy to set up and use. But it isn't quiet - especially when it runs out of paper - it seems to enjoying whirling and clicking aimlessly to remind you it needs paper!
After a couple of weeks the paper feed stopped working, it seemed that the roller didn't drop down far enough to pick up the paper. I tried a number of different types and qualities of paper but to no avail so I sent it back to Amazon - the return process was easy and very efficient.
My new one arrived next day and has worked well for a couple of months....BUT now has the same problem. It is going back today so that Amazon can pick up the issue with HP.
It may be a batch issue or model problem - so while I have been happy with HP - I cant recommend this product.

Spoilt by poor paper feed mechanism, 2010-03-07 Stylish high-spec printer. Print quality is excellent and print speed impressive. Scanner / copier quick to respond. It takes time and patience to set up the wireless function. My store of the latter was insufficient so I had to call in professional support to complete task. Worth the hassle for the ability to site printer remotely from PC.
Main criticism is the paper feed mechanism which is remarkably temperamental for a printer of this quality and price. Whilst the feed tray has side sliders to keep paper snug in print tray laterally, there is no similar mechanism to ensure appropriate longitudinal pressure. Hence paper sometimes drifts back in paper tray, triggering 'no paper in tray' error message. This is simple to correct but it does pose the question of, why such a poorly designed paper feed system for an otherwise excellent product?
