Average rating of 4/5 Gamecom 777's and XBOX 360 hmm.. possible but problematic, 2010-08-13
Hi,
I would just like to say first of all that i really like the Gamecom 777's I have been using them now for quite some time for use with my XBOX 360 for playing my favorite game at the moment Battlefields Bad Company 2. The sound quality I think is excellent and the microphone is also very good and i find them very comfortable to wear for extended periods. They are open Ear which is great because you can hear people talking in the same room as you or the baby monitor :-). The Gamecom 777's come with a USB Dolby Surround dongle you plug into the PC you then attach the headset to this. You can if you want decide not use the Surround sound card and just plug these into your normal PC sound card. They come with two 3.5mm jacks one for mic , one for headphone. I have watched a couple of DVD's using the USB Surround dongle and the Gamecoms and I think the sound produced using the surround card+headset is superb try watching ( Master and Commander !). They also have a volume control and Mic on and off built into the cable which works well. A Minor gripe is the cable length is a little to short for me if you want to sit on the couch and use them.. then again they are designed for PC gaming and you tend to sit close to the monitor...

Use with XBOX 360 is problematic... better to buy a more compatible headset in the first place something like a Turtle Beach X41.
I actually bought these in error thinking that I could use these with the 360 due to a misleading review Plantronics has on their website Naughty Naughty Plantronics. You can't use the Gamecom 777's with the XBOX 360 as they come in the box. The USB dongle does not work on XBOX 360 either so in hind sight I also should of bought the Gamecom 377's which are cheaper or a out of the box compatible headset. Anyway to get these bad boys to work you need some way of getting amplified audio and some way of mixing the XBOX live chat with the audio signal and then you also need to have some way of getting the Microphone to work as well. It took me a while to work out how to get this headset to work with the 360, but if you insist on using Gamecoms 377s/777s with the XBOX 360 or any other PC headset for that matter that uses standard 3.5mm jacks for mic and audio read on...

The easiest way you can get these to work with the XBOX 360 is by plugging the headphones into your TV headphone socket (if you have one) and buying a Speed-Link - Xbox 360 Live Headset Adapter or preferably the SteelSeries Xbox 360 Headset Connector . I have both and they available on Amazon. You wont get Surround this way however...

If you want surround sound or dont have a headphone socket on your TV its gets expensive read on...
In my setup: I dont have a headphone socket on my TV and I wanted 7.1 Surround sound so I use a Turtle beach Earforce DSS 7.1 Surround sound processor which has a built in amp for the headphones which you need otherwise they are too quiet. This is connected to the optical out on the XBOX using an AV lead "HDMI AV Cable for Microsoft xbox 360" the headphone connector on the Gamecoms plugs into this via a long audio cable and audio connector. I use the Speedlink adapter mentioned above connected to the XBOX controller and the Mic connector on the Gamecoms plugs into this.. You then set the XBOX live chat to come out of your TV and turn down the sound effects/music in game so they mix correctly with XBOX live voice chat. This works fairly well but doesn't allow me to turn up or down the XBOX Live Chat/Game Audio independently easily. I am however waiting for the "Steelseries Spectrum Audio Mixer" which plus into the XBOX controller this due out end of September which should allow me to do this. You can also buy an ASTRO A40 Mixamp to do this but its expensive.. but does include the Dolby processor so you wont need the DSS if you have one of these....

I hope this helps people who already bought this headset or want for some reason to use this headset with the 360. My setup contains currently the following items:
1 Gamecom headset 377 or 777
1 3.5mm female to female audio connector
1 2 Metre Stereo Audio Cable 3.5mm jacks on both ends
1 Turtle Beach DSS 7.1 Surround Sound Module
1 SteelSeries Xbox Headset Connector Black
1 HDMI AV Cable for Microsoft xbox 360

Average rating of 2/5 Unusable with USB dolby adapter, 2010-06-30
I bought my Gamecom 777 just 2 days back. Its making loud crackling and hissing noises even at low volume. Its virtually unusable when i use the USB Dolby Adaptor, when i use the analog jacks its much better. But then i dint pay so much to use it as an analog headphone. Sadly this is the worst headphone set i have ever had.

Average rating of 2/5 Good headset let down by 3.5mm jack connectors on USB dongle, 2010-02-24
Pros:
+ Solid design
+ Nice hide away microphone in the headset
+ Clear audio and good quality microphone
+ Convenient mute & volume

Cons:
+ Headset itself is quite bulky
+ 3.5mm jacks disconnect too easily (see below)from USB dongle.

Let me explain the problem. The headset has two 3.5mm jack connectors (microphone and audio). You can connect these to a USB dongle for the device, this acts as a USB audio device for the PC.

The problem is that these jacks can disconnect far too easily. Also because there is no colour coding for either jack connector it is difficult to see (in dark conditions) which connector fits where.

Quite often I've accidentally disconnected the mic or speakers (or both) because of this design flaw.

Average rating of 4/5 Gamecom plantronics 555 5.1 headset, 2010-05-21
When i took this product outta the box for the first time, there was no sound in the right ear. Strangely, it started working after a bit.
Stereo sound when plugged into my x-fi card is excellent. Not quite as good with the provided sound card and so far, the 5.1 is useless on everything i've tested.
Trackir Proclip took some persuading to fit on side but with small modifications it is now a very stable platform for the head-tracker.
I'd have no trouble recommending this producy if it was a little cheaper. £40 would be a good price. They are significantly better than the creative fatal1ty headset
that retails for around £35.

Average rating of 4/5 Very Comfortable, 2010-06-28
After looking at ALLOT of different headsets in this price range of £50 or less, it was a difficult choice to pick the right one, but i am very happy with the Plantronics GameCom 777 Dolby Open Ear Gaming Headset. having come from a £15 pair of basic open ear PC headphones, i didnt really want to spend over £50, and my criteria were that they had to be comfortable & give good sound quality. In this case the the Gamcom 777's did this, they sit comfortably over the head, not too tight & with a nice soft foam around the ear cups and on the top of the head band, perfect for extended use. although with the hot weather at the moment, they do make my ears very hot & red after long usage. the sound quality is very good, although it doesnt cut out ALL outside noise 100%, it didnt really make much difference when the bullets were flying as i was oblivious. locating the specific location of noises is very good, i can pick up the direction/detection of footsteps at reasonable ranges, and larger things like tanks at longer ranges(although the game i play with them mostly has a range limit anyways).

The headset comes with a small DOLBY souncard(about the size of a mobile phone with the USB), however i havent used this as at the moment i have a souncard in my PC, and so i can just use the audio/Mic jack to plug into my creative speakers external volume controller. This headset also has a microphone, which is very hard to see, as it sits hidden in the left side of the frame(it had a sticker on it when unboxing, its that hard to spot) ideal for me anyway, as i dont use the MIC and not being able to see it & it sitting out the way i dont even notice it, excellent. One of the problems i found, was that the little sound volume adjustment box(in the pic) located in the middle of the headsets lead, tended to swing about allot hitting things, however, they have(or unintenionally) put a small crocodile clip, which slips up & down the lead from the headphones, so you can put it next to the volume adjustment box, and clip it to your top to avoid this, neat.

In conclusion i really like the Gamecom 777 headset, it ticks all the boxes for me with comfort & sound quality, plus a few other things besides. its also the right side of £50 and visualy looks like a very professional set of headphones(boxed nicely too).Obviously you can get better headsets, but thats if you want to spend upto £100 on a pair, so if you in the market for something similar & at this price, you cannot go wrong with these imo, reccomended.
