 Just wanted it to work!, 2009-11-14
Take delivery of a lovely looking printer, bristling with capabilities, and you're full of optimism. Set up reasonably easily. Worked well for three months, then started printing with zebra stripes. Printhead problem, replacement printhead was actually also faulty, very unlikely, so HP replace the whole body of the printer under warranty (Note: replacement parts are not new and are only guaranteed for three months). Printer refuses to recognise two replacement cartidges (HP ones). Problems with the software, 3 hours external computer consultant, and still not right. Then three weeks out of warranty the rollers in the replacement wear out and starts printing crooked, halfway down the page - one or two at first, eventually every copy. Duplex copying doesn't print on the top and bottom inch of the page. Out of warranty helpline - yes if you pay another £15. Otherwise you're left with the website and your software guide. HP Help in South Africa are brutally polite but left with the feeling that you're being neurotic about your problems - you want to try a few days out in the bush.
Forget it, useless, sent it back. Probably to be recycled into replacement parts...
Fax feeder broke, 2009-10-14
I Bought this primarily as a fax but within a couple of weeks the fax feeder stopped working so cannot fax - usless to me now except as a spare printer

These machines are great when they are working - normally for around 11 months.
There are loads of plastic gears and when one wears out or breaks, the thing is useless.
This is the third HP Officejet I have had. The first wore out at 11 months so I contacted HP and they sent me a replacement. They asked for the old unit back but I had already taken it to the dump!
When the second one expired I bought a cheap HP m/f machine from Tesco. There was no fax function so eventually I bought the L7780.
The machine broke down at 11 months and I diagnosed the same gear wheel wear as it was making the same graunching noises as previous machines.
I contacted HP and they said that my machine was out of warrenty by 3 days (It wasn't). I emailed them a copy of the invoice and was told they would be back within 1 working day. Heard nothing so rang them again after 6 days. They told me the same story and that they had not received my email. They had, because I had their confirmation!!!. The person in India that I was dealing with wanted the copy invoice again with the promise that my claim would be put forward to a "dedicated person". This time I had verbal confirmation that my email had arrived but I have heard nothing since.
I am not sure an extended warranty would be any good. HP just don't seem to care about their customers. I will now try a third time to get my machine sorted out but I am not hopeful. How do you get to a complaints department? All email addresses and phone numbers direct you to Customer Support and they are in India and useless!
Steer clear of HP but I am not confident any other manufacturer is any better.
HP Offciejet Pro L7780, 2010-02-16
I purchased this from Amazon in march 2009, it being my third HP Officejet.
On the positive side, the separate colour ink cartridges are useful and save money.
Lots of nagatives. It is extremely temperamental and continually freezes- not responding to any buttons-and has to be disconnected; the warning light that cartridges need replacing starts ages prior to replacement being necessary. The quality of the machine build is not good and certainly not as robust as my earlier HP all in ones.
The first one had to be replaced within a couple of months as the door catch on the cartridge access door broke. Replaceemtn was well handled by HP. The replacement machine had a redesigned door so it must have been a common problem. This one keeps "freezing" too so maybe an incompatability issue with Vista.
It is noisier than I expected.
I also bought the extra paper tray which is probably not necessary.
Overall , it has been a massive disappointment and I would definitely not recommend it. In fact, I am so nervous about the quality and durability I subsequently took out an extended warranty.
Beware before you buy this printer!!, 2009-03-08
I got this printer last year and it worked OK for a good few months. Then trouble started. Scanning failed to work and the HP solution - reinstall the software suite. Great fun! Then after installing XP Service Pack 3 all went pear shaped - mirror image printing, no scanning etc. HP solution - uninstall Service Pack 3. More fun.
Now the really good part. I got a new laptop with XP Pro last week and the HP printer installation failed on several occasions. My IT support company couldn't help and in the end we had to reinstall Windows as registry entries were corrupted.
After many, many hours on the phone to HP technical support they have finally agreed that this printer will not work with XP Service Pack 3.
If you have this version of Windows, save yourself hours of grief - DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER!!
