Average rating of 5/5 Original black ink essential, 2010-06-28
I have used the cheap compatible inks, and while the other colours including the thinner black cartridge (521) produce fine print outs, I highly recommend the genuine PGI-520. This ink produces the high quality, sharp and true black needed for printing photographs and printing on non-matt media. Substitute the other colours with compatible inks, but don't scrimp on this one. I can say this from experience as I am a stationer and very often print on non-matt paper and card, as well as p-rint a lot of photos. The quality and difference is hugely noticeable.

Usually I don't review products that have a lot of reviews already as it's normally the case that everything that needs to be said has been said, but in this case that is simply not true. Most of the top rated reviews talk about the price of the cartridges or advocate generic stock instead. To me, that doesn't say much about this product.

I bought these replacements for a Canon PIXMA iP4700 printer. As a photographer, I use a colour-calibrated system and I need the final printed result to match the colours on the screen. The drivers for my printer include ICC colour profiles for Canon inks and papers, and the iP4700 is capable of using the Adobe RGB (1998) colour space, which is the colour space I work in with my photographs. So why would I want to mortgage the quality of my prints by using third party inks which the drivers can't account for in terms of colour management?

If that was all a foreign language to you, the short version is that the printer creates specific colours by mixing inks according to a recipe, and if it doesn't know what the ink is that you've put in it then that recipe will be wrong. If colour accuracy is important to you, use genuine inks.

On to the physical aspects of these cartridges - I am quite pleased. They have a window that spans the entire depth of the cartridge so you can see clearly that new cartridges are full, and used cartridges are indeed empty. They also have a clever sponge-like material inside them which ensures that when the last of the ink is ready to leave the tank, it stays over the exit nozzle instead of pooling somewhere else inside the cartridge.

These cartridges are easy to fit, robust, and fairly economical. They may cost a bit more than generics but for the reasons already stated, I'm happy to pay a couple of pounds more to get the best possible results. What would make them even better is if Canon implemented a system for returning spent cartridges, as some other manufacturers do.

First one arrived with a scanner problem, but Amazon quickly replaced this with a new one.
No problem setting up. (I haven't bothered with wireless, just use usb, so cannot comment on this.).
This machine does EVERYTHING that I need of a printer, particularly duplex work for booklets, which is my main useage. (It took a while to realise that you feed document information in as a straightforward A5 document, rather than using bookfold etc., in Office Word setup - this being a requirenent for HP printers.)
Large word files from the net simply zip off in booklet form too, saving time and paper.
Print quality in duplex seems a little lighter than the norm, but not problematically so.
Glossy photograpic images using rear feed are excellent.
Scanner is as good as my stand alone canon, and copier is likewise good quality.
I am so pleased that I steered away from Epson and HP, which I would normally buy.
I would certainly recommend this machine.

Average rating of 5/5 Everything I hoped it would be - so far!, 2010-07-27
Being new to digital cameras, I'm taking this one step at a time, & have only just begun to master its tricks. So far, so good - both camera & Canon computer software seem very user-friendly & easy to use. I'm pleased with my photos & was pleasantly surprised that the quality especially sharpness is so much better on computer monitor than on camera screen.

Average rating of 5/5 It has to be Canon, 2010-05-26
As a photographer, image quality is paramount. These cartridges teamed with Canon paper reall do give superb print quality (dependent on you printer model). In my opinion and experience one has to buy genuine Canon original cartridges (and paper for photos) to get the best quality consistency and reliability. They're well made with minimal packaging and in-printer functions for testing, cleaning and aligning all work seemlessly. A nice novelty is the integration of LEDs into the cartridges which shows, with varying flashes, the level of ink inside them.

Yes, they're more expensive, though not by vast amaounts, but you're paying for the quality and if that's what's important to you then this is what you need to buy.
